Paul Barrand

Originally from Sheffield, Paul studied in Liverpool and then Leicester, and has lived and worked in the region ever since.  Paul has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows including the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Gallery and Open 24 at Leicester's New Walk Museum.

Paul's collection of paintings is representative of two ongoing themes.  One is the depiction of the city and its less iconic locations, the back streets and the suburbs.  The other is roads and motorways in all their limitless capacity for metaphor and symbolism.  In both themes, the emphasis is on the settings, with mood, atmosphere and lighting more important than topographical accuracy. The drama and stillness of the work is reminiscent of Hopper and his urban melancholy. Paul says

"An appreciation of cinema, especially film noir is at play
in how I plan, format and compose the paintings."
