Summer Open 2016
7 June - 30 July 2016
Cank Street Gallery is overflowing with an intriguing array of art. First time exhibitors hang alongside established artists to create a dynamic display to be admired, enjoyed and absorbed. All works are for sale and include paintings, drawings, handmade prints, sculpture, ceramics, glass and textiles.
Anyone can enter this annual competition. During the selection process each entry is individually considered and assessed with the aim of showcasing talented artists and encouraging future masters. A cash prize of £500 is awarded to the artwork judged best in show.
The winner of the 2016 Prize is Christine Johnson-Hume for 'View from the Stairs, Derry'. From the top of a stone staircase which leads up on to the ancient walls surrounding the troubled city of her childhood, Christine has painted a small dark cityscape. The clouds hang heavy in a haunting and reflective evening light. The ink and paint create a patina of memories. A painting that evokes feelings of personal reflection, perhaps lloss or yearning; a painting that stays with you.
